How We Can Help . . .
Advancing Opportunities’ team of Augmentative Communication Specialists provides evaluations to help people with disabilities find the augmentative and alternative communication system that will work best for them.
For children, augmentative and alternative communication evaluations are frequently conducted through the child’s school. Advancing Opportunities has provided many AAC assessments for students around the state. To get the evaluation process started, the school should submit a Request for District Contract.
For schools that already have a contract with the agency, the next step is completing AAC Evaluation Referral Packet, which includes a Student Referral Form and questionnaires for parents, teachers and aides, and any therapists who are working with the child.
In determining the most appropriate system, it may be necessary to try a number of different devices. The agency’s Technology Lending Center allows individuals, families, and schools to borrow and try devices free of charge. Based on the evaluation, the Augmentative Communication Specialist will make a recommendation. Once the recommendation is approved by the district, and equipment is purchased, they can provide training to ensure the AAC system is being used effectively and all are satisfied with the outcome.
